Bulk Trash & Brush Pickup in Prosper, TX: What They Take and When to Call a Hauler

Prosper collects up to 4 cubic yards of bulk items every week on your regular trash day, set out by 7 a.m. Tied brush has no cap if limbs are 4 feet or shorter and 6 inches thick or less. Bricks, concrete, tires, car parts and commercial construction debris stay off the curb.

How does Prosper's weekly bulk pickup work?

Prosper runs bulk collection every week, on the same day your trash and recycling carts go out. The Town of Prosper's trash and recycling page caps it at 4 cubic yards per week. Items need to be at the curb by 7 a.m.

The Town defines bulk as appliances, furniture or other household items too large for a cart. You can also set out up to 10 extra trash bags. Since pickup comes weekly, a big clear-out can be spread over several trash days.

What fits in the weekly 4 yards

The Town's acceptable list covers more than couches and chairs. These all qualify:

  • Furniture and other household pieces too big for the cart
  • Washers, dryers, water heaters and kitchen appliances (see the refrigerant rule below)
  • Carpet, rolled and bundled in 4-foot lengths
  • Fence panels up to 4 by 6 feet, with the nails pulled
  • Junk mowers and weed-eaters, once all gas and oil are drained

Spoil, dirt, bricks and concrete in Prosper

Landscaping and patio projects leave spoil behind: dirt, broken pavers and chunks of old slab. Prosper won't collect non-compactible items such as bricks and concrete with regular bulk. Commercial construction and remodeling debris is on the prohibited list too.

For a loose soil pile, check with the Town before it goes to the curb. Don't assume weekly bulk will take it.

A hauler is the usual answer for spoil. We've done a dirt removal job that was loaded, hauled off, broom swept and finished with a washed driveway. If the slab is still in the ground, that's a concrete removal job, quoted per job.

Leftover drywall, lumber and offcuts from a remodel are a different load. Our page on remodel and construction debris explains how that haul-off works.

Brush and bagged leaves: Prosper's bundle rules

Yard waste goes out weekly on your trash and recycling day. Tied, bundled brush has no quantity limit. Each limb must be 4 feet or shorter and no more than 6 inches across.

Bundles top out at 50 lb. Prosper only accepts biodegradable cotton or jute rope for tying them.

Leaves and grass clippings go in brown kraft paper bags, tied shut, each 40 lb or less. Debris from a commercial landscaper or tree service can't be left at the curb or taken to the Fifth Street drop-off. The Collin County yard waste guide compares these limits with nearby towns.

Fridges, freezers and the refrigerant tag

Prosper requires a tag from a certified technician on any appliance that held refrigerant or Freon. The tag shows the refrigerant has been removed. Washers, dryers and water heaters don't carry that rule.

If you'd rather skip the tag errand, appliance pickup in Prosper is an option. We unhook standard plug-in and water-line connections. A gas hookup needs a plumber to disconnect it first.

Saturday drop-off at the Public Works Center

Prosper residents can drop bulky items at the Public Works Center, 601 W Fifth St, on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Bring a current Prosper utility bill.

For bigger self-haul loads, the Town's FAQ points residents to the landfill in Melissa at 3820 Sam Rayburn Highway (SH 121). That landfill charges a fee. The same FAQ says Prosper residents may not use the Custer Road transfer station in Plano.

The Town also runs an Annual Spring Cleanup. It takes extra trash, household appliances, furniture and mattresses, with refrigerators and freezers tagged for refrigerant removal. Bring a Prosper utility bill and a driver's license.

Paint, batteries and electronics: the once-a-year door pickup

Each Prosper resident gets one free household hazardous waste pickup at the door per year through Republic Services. Email the Town's HHW fillable form to Republic, and Republic supplies the bags.

The program takes paint, oils, batteries, solvents, pesticides, gasoline, antifreeze, fluorescent bulbs, aerosols and medical sharps. It also takes TVs, monitors, computers, laptops, printers, copiers and microwave ovens.

It won't take commercially generated HHW or electronics, ammunition, explosives, tires, asbestos, pharmaceuticals or smoke detectors. Keep electronics and batteries out of the green recycling cart. Regular bulk refuses hazardous waste, tires, batteries, propane tanks and car parts as well.

We don't haul wet paint, chemicals or motor oil either. The household hazardous waste guide covers other routes.

Staging a weekly pile so it actually gets taken

Measure before you stack. Four cubic yards is a pile about 3 feet high, 3 feet deep and 12 feet long.

Stage it the evening before so the 7 a.m. cutoff isn't a scramble. Tape the refrigerant tag where the driver can see it, and drain mowers ahead of time.

Furniture in good shape may be worth more to someone else than to the curb. Area charities are worth a call before it goes out.

When does a hauler beat Prosper's trash day?

Weekly pickup handles a lot. It falls short when the pile tops 4 yards, holds bricks or concrete, or nobody can get a recliner out by 7 a.m.

That's the gap we fill from our base in McKinney, about 20 minutes away. Send photos for a quote, pick a time, and we haul it off and sweep up. Loads are priced by trailer space, starting at $189 for a minimum pickup, and the price is firm before we load.

The Prosper service area page covers what we do in town. For specific jobs, see furniture hauling in Prosper, brush and limb cleanup and garage and attic cleanouts.

Where can Prosper residents take junk themselves?

The Public Works Center at 601 W Fifth St takes bulky items on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon with a current utility bill. For larger loads, the Town's FAQ points to the fee-charging landfill in Melissa, not the Custer Road station.

Prosper's bulk pickup won't take bricks, concrete or other non-compactible items. A private hauler can load spoil and haul it off. We price that by how much trailer space it takes, with a photo quote first.
