Where to Donate Furniture in Collin County

To donate furniture in Collin County, start with clean, sturdy, complete pieces and send photos to area charities before loading anything. Every organization sets its own list of what it takes, and some offer pickup for larger pieces. Whatever gets turned down can go to your city's bulk pickup or to a hauler who donates the usable pieces for you.

Is your furniture in good enough shape to donate?

Look at each piece the way a resale shopper would. If you'd hesitate to bring it into your own home, a charity probably will too.

Run through this check before you call anyone. It saves a wasted trip and an awkward no at the loading door.

  • Clean: no stains, pet hair, smoke smell or musty odor.
  • Sturdy: no wobbly legs, cracked frames or drawers that won't slide.
  • Complete: shelves, hardware, cushions and legs all present. Tape small parts in a bag to the piece.
  • Working: lamps and powered recliners turn on and run.
  • Upholstery intact: no tears, burns or broken springs.

How do you find a charity that will take it?

Area charities and resale stores each publish their own list of accepted and refused items. Those lists change, so check the current one before you load the truck.

Take a clear photo of each piece from the front and side, with any flaws showing. Many groups decide from a photo, especially for pickups.

  • Ask whether they take the item at all, and in what condition.
  • Ask about drop-off hours and where to unload.
  • Ask whether they pick up large pieces, and from which ZIP codes.
  • Ask for a donation receipt if you plan to claim a tax deduction.
  • Never leave furniture outside a closed donation site.

Which pieces are hardest to donate?

Some furniture gets turned down far more than the rest. Ask before you load any of these, and have a backup plan.

Used mattresses are the most common no. Our mattress disposal guide covers what to do with one.

  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Sofas and chairs with tears, stains or odors
  • Oversized entertainment centers, TV armoires and china cabinets
  • Particle board pieces that have been moved before
  • Pianos and organs, covered in our piano removal guide
  • Cribs and baby furniture

Do any city cleanup events take furniture?

Celina runs one. Celina's Clean Sweep page says the city and CWD host three Clean Sweep events a year for items that don't fit regular curbside trash.

Those events accept bulk trash, yard waste, appliances and electronic waste, among other items. Check Celina's page for the next date.

Prosper's annual spring cleanup accepts furniture and mattresses for disposal, not donation. You'll need a Prosper utility bill and driver's license.

What can you do with furniture nobody takes?

Worn-out furniture can usually go out with your city's bulk pickup. Size and weight rules decide whether a piece qualifies, so check your city first.

Our Collin County bulk pickup rules guide covers every city. Here's how the furniture rules compare in a few of them.

Can you drop furniture off yourself?

A few cities let residents haul furniture to a disposal site for free. Allen's do-it-yourself disposal page accepts furniture, mattresses and box springs up to 8 feet in any dimension.

Melissa's landfill page lists mattresses, furniture and lawn furniture on its free resident drop-off. Our guide to dumping junk in Collin County covers the rest of the sites and paperwork.

How can you give furniture away instead?

If a charity says no but the piece still works, offer it to friends, neighbors or a local online group. Plenty of people want a free dresser and will bring their own truck.

Set a pickup window and a deadline. If nobody shows by then, move to bulk pickup or a hauler so the piece doesn't sit in the garage.

When does a hauler make sense?

Hiring it out makes sense when pieces are heavy, upstairs, or part of a bigger move or estate. It also helps when the city's weight or item limits rule them out.

Our furniture removal service carries pieces out of any room, any floor or a storage unit. If a piece is in good shape, we try to get it donated to area charities instead of tossed.

Send photos for a quote, pick a time, and we haul it off and sweep up. A couch and a couple of chairs usually fit our Minimum Pickup, from $189 with a firm quote before loading. We serve McKinney, Allen, Frisco and the rest of the county.

Quick answers

Who picks up donated furniture in Collin County?

Some area charities and resale stores pick up large pieces, often after reviewing a photo. Call ahead, since pickup areas and accepted items change.

Can I donate a used mattress?

It's one of the hardest items to place, so ask before you load it. If no one takes it, Allen, Plano and Anna accept mattresses in bulk pickup.

Do you take furniture to a specific charity?

We donate usable pieces to area charities, but we don't promise a particular one. If you want a piece to go to a certain organization, arrange that with them directly.

What if my couch is too heavy for bulk pickup?

Allen and Melissa exclude items over 150 lb, and Frisco caps items at 50 lb. A hauler can carry it out instead, and our couch removal guide walks through the options.
