How to Get Rid of a Couch: Donate, Curb, Drop Off or Haul

To get rid of a couch in Collin or Grayson County, donate or give it away if it's clean and intact. If it's worn out, most cities take furniture on bulk day, but size and weight limits vary, and Frisco caps items at 50 pounds. A furniture removal service carries it out from any room, priced by trailer space, starting at $189.

Which option fits your couch?

Start with condition, then weight, then where it sits in the house. Those three things decide which route is realistic.

A clean couch with no rips, stains or pet damage can go to a second home. A worn-out couch needs the curb, a drop-off site or a hauler.

A sleeper sofa or a big sectional changes the math. They're heavy, awkward on stairs, and often too big for a city's bulk limits.

  • Good shape, easy to move: give it away or donate it.
  • Worn out, light enough for your city's limits: bulk pickup.
  • Worn out, you have a truck and a helper: a drop-off site, if you're eligible.
  • Upstairs, heavy, or part of a bigger clear-out: have it hauled.

Can you donate or give away a couch?

Often, if it's in good shape. Charities that take furniture each set their own condition rules and pickup areas, so call first and send a photo.

Free listings tend to move a decent couch fastest. Put the measurements in the post, and say whether it's a sleeper, since the pull-out frame adds a lot of weight.

Our furniture donation guide for Collin County covers what charities usually check before they say yes.

Will the city take a couch on bulk day?

Most cities accept furniture, but the limits differ a lot. These come from each city's own trash page.

  • McKinney: McKinney's residential trash page says bulky items are by appointment only, with up to 12 free collections a year. Request it through the Waste Wizard before noon the business day before.
  • McKinney set-outs must fit within 3.5 ft tall by 3 ft deep by 9 ft long, or be two large household pieces. Our McKinney bulk pickup guide walks through booking.
  • Allen: Allen's bulk item page collects automatically once a month on an assigned Saturday, out by 7 a.m. It accepts broken furniture, but items must weigh less than 150 lb.
  • Frisco: Frisco's bulk trash page requires an online reservation, closing at noon the business day before. The limit is 5 items, none over 6 ft in any direction or over 50 lb.
  • Frisco counts each separate piece as an item, so a sectional broken into sections uses several of your 5 spots. Crews can't go onto private property, so it has to be curbside or alley side.
  • Plano: Plano's bulky waste page assigns each household a collection day. Piles can't be larger than 6 by 4 by 4 feet, and Plano's accepted items list includes furniture.
  • Prosper: Prosper's trash and recycling page collects up to 4 cubic yards of bulk weekly on trash day, at the curb by 7 a.m.
  • Melissa: Melissa's bulk items page offers free monthly pickup on a set Friday, up to 4 cubic yards. Furniture is accepted, but items over 150 lb are not.
  • Sherman: Sherman's bulk and brush page offers one free pickup a month. It's call-in, through the Sherman app, the website or 903-892-7777.
  • Denison: Denison's bulk collection page runs curbside bulk six times a year, limited to one pile of 2 cubic yards or less.

Why do couches fail the city's rules?

Weight is the usual reason. A full-size couch can easily top Frisco's 50 lb cap, and a sleeper sofa can push past Allen's and Melissa's 150 lb limit.

Size is the next one. Frisco's 6 ft limit rules out many sofas, and McKinney's set-out box is 9 ft long.

Timing is the third. If your pickup is weeks away, the couch sits by the curb in the weather. The Collin County bulk pickup rules guide compares every city side by side.

How do you get a couch out without damage?

Most wall dings happen at door frames and stair turns. A little prep saves a repaint.

  • Pull the cushions and unscrew the legs. Unclip sectional pieces and remove any bolt-on arms.
  • Measure the tightest point on the way out, usually a door frame or the turn at the bottom of the stairs.
  • Pad door frames and corners with moving blankets or cardboard.
  • Tip long sofas on end to clear a doorway, and plan the angle before you lift.
  • On stairs, the heavier end goes downhill with the stronger person below it.
  • Strap a sleeper's pull-out frame closed so it doesn't unfold mid-carry.
  • If it has to go over a railing or a tight turn, stop and get another set of hands.

Where can you drop off a couch yourself?

It depends on your address. McKinney households get their first two drop-off visits a month free. Bring a McKinney water bill dated within 30 days and a matching Texas driver's license.

NTMWD's solid waste facilities page says residents of Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Plano and Richardson can drop off certain waste twice a month. They need a city-issued utility bill reflecting solid-waste service, and it's at one of four Citizen Convenience Centers.

Allen's do-it-yourself disposal page accepts furniture up to 8 feet in any dimension. Melissa's landfill page lists furniture among items its free resident drop-off takes.

  • Sherman's Citizens' Trash Drop-Off Station charges $11 for up to 2 cubic yards, and asks for a driver's license and a current water bill.
  • Denison's Residential Collection Station takes the first cubic yard of junk free. It does not accept contractors or landlords.
  • See our Sherman and Denison bulk and drop-off guide and the Collin County dump guide for hours and rules.

When should you have it hauled?

Hire it out when the couch is over the city's limits, upstairs, or part of a room you're clearing anyway. It also makes sense if you don't have a truck.

Our furniture removal service carries sofas, sectionals and recliners out of any room or floor. We bring the dollies and straps, and we take legs off when we need to.

Pricing goes by trailer space, with a Minimum Pickup starting at $189 for something like a couch and a couple of chairs. We confirm a firm quote before loading, and same-day service is available when the schedule allows.

Quick answers

Why won't my city take my couch?

Usually weight or size. Allen and Melissa cap items at 150 lb, and Frisco caps them at 50 lb and 6 ft in any direction. A sleeper sofa or big sectional can blow past those limits.

Do I need to have the couch outside before you get there?

No. Wherever it's sitting, we carry it out. That's what you're paying for.

Does it cost more if the couch is upstairs?

No. The price goes by how much room the load takes on the trailer, with no labor add-on. We confirm it on site before anything moves.

What happens to a couch you haul away?

If it's still in decent shape, we try to get it to area charities instead of the landfill. Worn-out furniture is disposed of properly. Our Plano furniture removal page shows how that works locally.
