Plano gives every household an assigned monthly bulky waste day, which you can find on the city's collection map or by calling 972-769-4150. Piles can be no larger than 6 by 4 by 4 feet and must be out by 7 a.m. Brush isn't part of bulky pickup; it goes out with weekly yard trimmings instead.
Finding your Plano bulky waste day
Each household has its own bulky waste collection day. Look it up on the interactive collection map linked from Plano's bulky waste collection page, or call 972-769-4150.
You don't book the monthly pickup. You just need the pile in place by 7 a.m. on your day. Don't put it out more than five days early.
What does a legal bulky pile look like?
Plano measures piles, and each one must stay within 6 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet. Bigger piles have to go through a special paid collection.
Where the pile sits matters as much as its size. Keep it no more than 6 feet from the alley or curb. Leave at least 2 feet of space from carts, fences, vehicles and gas meters.
Items the bulky crews accept
Plano's accepted-items list includes these, and several come with prep rules:
- Furniture, mattresses and box springs.
- Stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters and microwaves.
- Carpet and padding, cut into small sections of 50 pounds or less each.
- Wood and fence sections cut to 6 feet long by 4 feet wide at most, stacked no higher than 4 feet.
- Lawn mowers, with the gas and oil removed.
Items Plano leaves at the curb
Brush and yard trimmings are left out of monthly bulky pickup. The bulky and special paid collections also refuse a long list of heavier or riskier materials:
- Bricks, rock, asphalt, gravel, concrete, dirt and sod.
- Roofing and shingles.
- Glass panes, glass doors and mirrors.
- Railroad ties and compressed gas cylinders.
- Vehicle parts and tires.
- Buildings, building attachments and sheds.
Contractor jobs are a separate case
If a project needed a contractor, its waste doesn't go out for city pickup. Plano says the contractor or a permitted hauler takes it straight to the 121 Regional Disposal Facility.
Fridges, freezers and the special paid collection
Anything with Freon is handled differently. Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units and water coolers must be scheduled as a special paid collection. Plano adds an environmental fee for each Freon item, per its special paid collection page.
Special paid collection is priced by the cubic yard with a minimum charge, billed on your Plano utility bill. Call Customer Service at 972-769-4150 to set it up.
- Yard trimmings that don't meet the weekly rules.
- Bulky items you need gone on a day other than your normal one.
- Large construction debris from a major household renovation.
How does Plano collect yard trimmings?
Yard trimmings go out on the same day as weekly trash, before 7 a.m. Plano doesn't require brush to be tied or bundled, per the city's yard trimmings page.
- Leaves, plant material and grass go in paper lawn bags of 50 pounds or less. Don't tape the bags shut.
- Brush piles can be up to 6 feet long, 4 feet high and 4 feet wide.
- Trunk pieces or stumps, 50 pounds or less each, go in a separate pile from smaller brush.
- Unpainted, unstained wood fence panels can go with trimmings if they're no bigger than 4 by 6 feet. Pull off bolts, latches and hinges first.
Why a big brush pile can sit for weeks
Crews spend about 15 minutes at each house. Plano says that's why multiple brush piles may take several weeks to collect.
Lawn crews you hire must follow the same yard trimmings rules, or extra collection charges can follow. For a wider look at brush disposal, see our Collin County yard waste and brush guide.
Taking a load to the transfer station yourself
Two NTMWD transfer stations sit inside Plano: Custer Road at 9901 Custer Rd and Parkway at 4030 W Plano Pkwy. That's per NTMWD's solid waste facilities page.
Plano's do-it-yourself disposal page allows residents two drop-offs per monthly billing cycle, with charges after that. Bring your latest Plano utility bill showing garbage service and a Texas driver license with a matching address.
- Vehicles: a passenger car or pickup, with trailer loads under 8 feet. Stake beds, box trucks and dump trailers pay.
- Remodeling waste of any type isn't covered by the free program and needs a paid drop-off.
- Fence panels, soil, brick and concrete ride free only if they're 10% or less of the load by volume.
- Metal appliances are recycled at every NTMWD facility except Custer Road.
- Brush and untreated wood go only to the Texas Pure wood grind facility at Custer Road, under 8 feet in any dimension.
Household chemical collection in Plano
Plano homeowners can have chemicals picked up at home. Call 972-769-4150 or use the online form on Plano's household chemical collection page.
Set chemicals out by 7 a.m. in a cardboard box marked HCC, under 50 pounds. Each collection is limited to 15 gallons, and containers over 5 gallons aren't taken.
Collected products are handed out free to residents at Plano's Household Chemical Reuse Center. Our hazardous waste guide for Collin County explains what we can't carry, like wet paint and motor oil.
Old TVs and monitors
Plano hosts community recycling events that take electronics on the first, second and third Saturdays of each month. Plano's electronics recycling page lists a per-unit charge for TVs and CRT monitors, cash or check only.
Screens have to be intact. The city's recycling partner can't take TVs or LCD or CRT monitors with broken screens. Our electronics and scrap metal disposal guide covers other routes.
Where the city's system runs out
Plano's program is roomy for a single pile on the right day. It gets slow with three brush piles, a Freon fridge, or a garage of mixed junk that won't sort into neat stacks.
Plano is about 25 minutes from our base in McKinney. The Plano service area page shows the kind of work we do on both sides of Central.
- Stumps and brush piles that would take weeks of curbside visits: yard debris and brush hauling in Plano.
- A Freon fridge or freezer you'd rather not schedule and tape: Plano appliance removal. We unhook plug-in and water-line connections; gas lines need a plumber first.
- Beds, sofas and dressers that never made it to the curb: furniture removal in Plano.
- Decades of boxes in the garage or attic: garage and attic cleanouts in Plano.
Pricing and the three steps
Our price depends on trailer space: a minimum pickup from $189, a half trailer from $515, a full trailer from $759. Send photos for a quote, pick a time, and we haul it off and sweep up.
